A free seminar for home repair workers and renovators will be held on February 8 in the Pinnacle Room at St. Joseph Berea. This is a rare opportunity to learn more about methods and materials for modifying a home for accessibility for people with disabilities. Scheduled for 11am to 1 pm, the session will include a complimentary lunch.
Berea native Mike Carter who operates Residential Accessibility Consulting, will discuss the range of home modification possibilities as well as how to determine the actual needs of the client. This will include the basics of grab bars and ramps, as well as moving walls and replacing showers. Carter currently practices as an Occupational Therapist in North Carolina, working with people who have disabilities. He also teaches online home modification courses through the University of Southern California.
Carter returns to Berea periodically to visit his family. This session, as well as another for general audiences, will be part of his February Berea trip. He is passionate about this work and has devoted much of his career to helping folks change their home environments to live safely and comfortably with limitations. His presentation includes demonstrations and examples of products and materials. Audience questions and stories are encouraged!
The seminar is sponsored by Berea Home Village whose mission is helping people age in place. Katie Heckman, Executive Director, says one of the most common requests is for dependable help in making structural changes to the home. This training is one of BHV’s initiatives to help develop needed resources. Those who attend the seminar may request to be listed as providers on the Berea Home Village resource list. It will be up to the provider and consumer to work out schedules and payment.
Katie also wants to especially invite volunteers such as church groups who may want to provide these services to their own members. Some Berea Home Village volunteers will attend.
