Volunteers Make a Difference

BHV is a nonprofit organization made up primarily of volunteers supported by paid staff, dedicated to helping people 50 and older in Berea remain in their homes.

Volunteering with BHV is as rewarding as it is flexible! You set your own schedule, and every assignment is matched to your interests, abilities, and availability. Most volunteer opportunities take place Monday through Friday, 8:00 am–5:00 pm, though we do host the occasional evening or weekend event.

Perks:

  • Mileage reimbursement for transportation of members

  • Volunteer Orientation to get you set up for success

  • Activities throughout the year, including lunch and learn events, Autumn Gala, Remembrance Service, Holiday Dinner, and awards celebration.

  • Must treat others with kindness and respect

  • Punctuality

  • Willingness to learn

  • Share a belief in the mission of BHV

  • Must pass background check

  • Agree to confidentiality, liability, and conflict of interest policies

 What do volunteers do?

  • Provide transportation for members to appointments, shopping, events in Berea and vicinity

  • Run errands like picking up prescriptions, groceries, or mail

  • Visit and/or make phone calls to check on members

  • Provide technology support to members to help with phone, computer, or television and remote

  • Provide help with minor home repairs and modifications

  • Plan or attend a Berea Home Village social and/or learning event

How does it work? Do I have a set schedule?

  • There is no set schedule. For example, you may be contacted by the executive director or other Berea Home Village representative to take a member to an appointment. If you are not able to do so, Berea Home Village will find another volunteer to help. Our normal hours for conducting business are Monday through Friday from 8am -5pm.

What is the process for learning about a volunteer activity or event?

  • Everything goes through the Berea Home Village organization. If there is going to be a learning or social event and you’ve expressed interest in that activity, we will reach out to you to see if you have time to help or if you want to attend.

Will Berea Home Village train me?

  • Yes. After deciding you’d like to be a volunteer, a training and orientation session will be scheduled. The session lasts about two and one-half hours and Berea Home Village provides you with lunch.

Will I need to have a background check?

  • Yes. All direct-service volunteers (those who work with members) and those who work with finances are required to have a background check. This is provided at no cost to our volunteers.
